Ceramation by Yellow Clay

(a stop-motion animation showcasing ceramic objects and ceramic-making processes)
“Ceramation” is an intersection of ceramic processes and stop-motion animation. This territory remains largely unexplored as an artistic expression. I am eager to investigate, bringing a sense of play and experimentation to this uncharted discipline.

”Mud Processor”, coming soon.
In a world of deadlines, Yellow Clay was stuck. With a single bowl left to produce and the essential materials back-ordered, the studio faced a standstill.

Yellow Clay turns to the Mud Processor software for a solution, and finds an unconventional path: the "Eco-Option." Instead of waiting for new supplies, the software suggested a resourceful option for mixing studio scraps—recycle clays and glazes to produce the bowl.

The result is …..

”Searching for Blue” ”青を探して”, 2023
Created to support Ukraine immediately following the invasion, Searching for Blue tells the story of Yellow Clay’s mission to find its counterpart. Because blue clay—tinted with cobalt carbonate—appears dull and gray while wet, Yellow Clay must use an imaginary "fire scope" to see its final, vibrant hue. Upon finding the blue clay, Yellow Clay proposes a partnership; together, they transform into a vessel that stands as a tribute to the Ukrainian flag.

“Invisible Structure”, 2022
Invisible Structure is a story of the Asian American experience through my lens as an East Asian, and ceramicist. Yellow Clay tries to rectify the feeling of invisibility with a sense of humor and hope. Yellow Clay was born during the pandemic when Asian hate was on the rise in the U.S. This made me reconsider my identity as a ceramic artist but most importantly an Asian American, and how I am placed in this complex history.

”LOVE”, 2021
Born in distant strata and shaped by different environments, Yellow Clay and White Clay are worlds apart geologically. Yet, a chance encounter long ago sparked a deep, elemental bond. Their roots still remain anchored in their separate landscapes. However, when they visit each other, they fuse their distinct histories into a single unified form with their flaming soul.

This is an experimental piece I made to test out the process of a ceramation.
